What’s In A Sign?

January 5, 2016 / Signage

“Signs, signs, everywhere a sign.” Those lyrics still ring true today; signs really are everywhere, whether we realize it or not.  Street signs, highway signs, yard signs, window signs, building signs, billboards…they are an integral piece of our daily lives.

Believe it or not, the first road signs were actually milestone markers, carved in stone and placed along roads at intervals telling the traveler how far they were from Rome.

The saying, “All roads lead to Rome” started in the 1100s and was quite literal, based on the fact that the RomanEmpire’s  road system radiated from the capital like thespokes of a wheel. Humankind has come a long way since those first crude “signs”. Street signs, in particular, have evolved rapidly, with most of the signage we know today being adapted within the last century.

Signs tell us where we are and show us where we are going, and literally tell us what to do in some cases (think ‘Stop’ or ‘Yield’). Signs are also used for advertising, to guide us to a particular store or to instill brand recognition.

Signs have evolved into particularly useful marketing tools. Properly placed signage should always be visible to your customers and potential customers. These “silent salespeople” are literally advertising for you every hour of every day, 365 days a year. Now that’s commitment!

Considering the constant advertising, it’s somewhat of a surprise that signage is one of the most cost-effective ways to promote your product and build your brand. The United States Small Business Administration (SBA) released a study that stated that signage is the most effective yet least expensive advertising medium that a business can use.

The value of a well designed on site signage is equal in value to 24 full page newspaper advertisements every year.

Statistics have shown that signage can attract half of a business’s new customers! The same study showed that just over a one-third of customers wouldn’t know the business was there without a sign. Research has also shown that on average, 85 percent of customers live or work within a five-mile radius of your business, and will pass your location 50-60 times a month in their travels. Think of the exposure a sign means to your business.

The fact is that no other form of advertising comes close to matching the efficiency and cost-effectiveness, dollar-for-dollar, of the on-premise sign.

It’s easy to see why your business should incorporate signage into its advertising campaign. Does your business utilize the power of signage? Are you rebranding? Moving your business to a new location? Is your current signage old or out-of-date and in need of an upgrade? Is there an upcoming special or event you want to advertise in the most efficient way possible?
