How to Connect With Your Target Audience Using Social Media

When a potential new client comes to us needing help with their social media efforts, one of the first questions we will ask them is, “What does your target audience look like?”

This information is the foundation for any social media plan. If you don’t know the target audience with which you are trying to connect, you can’t choose which social media channels to use, who to target with your paid advertising efforts, what kind of tone your messaging should have or what styles of graphics you should use.

While it stinks that you have to “pay to play” now on Facebook especially, (i.e. you can’t rely solely on organic reach anymore) advertising on Facebook does have its perks. There are so many targeting options available now on the Facebook ads platform that you really can essentially reach out and touch your ideal customer with your ads.

Facebook is just the start. Once you’ve identified your target audience, you need to decide which social sites they’re hanging out on. The last thing you want to do is waste time trying to reach your target audience on a social network when they aren’t even there.
